Women’s Health is Empowerment

Empowering Women Starts with Health & Well-being

March 8 is International Women’s Day, a time to recognize and celebrate the strength, resilience and achievement of women everywhere.  But empowerment is NOT just about career success, breaking barriers or supporting each other and our rights – it’s also about taking control of our own health, setting boundaries and prioritizing our well-being. So let’s talk about something ever woman deserves – good health!

Women’s health is often under-researched, underfunded and overlooked, and even more so recently, control taken out of our hands. As women, we often:

  • Take care of others before ourselves
  • Push through stress, exhaustion and feelings of being overwhelmed
  • Feel the pressure to “do it all” at the expense of our health and individual self

Women are known for giving, doing and showing up for everyone else. But I truly believe that empowerment includes taking of and making space for yourself.

I can’t tell you how many times this has come up with my patients and in my own education.  Women are expected to manage every decision or take care of everything whether at work or at home but, also, they are not allowed to say no.  This leads to chronic stress and burnout, and women putting their own needs and health last. Improper nutrition, stress, lack of sleep and hormonal shifts affect everything from energy levels to disease risk.

YOUR Health is your foundation – when you feel strong, energized and happy, you can show up fully in every area of your life.

What is the State of Women's Health?

According to the 2024 study published by the Commonwealth Fund, showed that women in the U.S.  have long had the worst  health care access and more unfavorable health outcomes compared to women in other high-income countries. Findings highlighted:

  • Access to care: The U.S. is the only nation in the analysis where a considerable percentage of women are uninsured. Women in the U.S. have among the lowest rates of access to a regular doctor or place of care and among the highest rates of unnecessary emergency room visits.
  • Affordability of care: Women in the U.S. have among the highest rates, and in some cases the highest rate, of skipping or delaying needed care because of the cost and having medical bill problems.
  • Mortality: As of 2022, women in the U.S. had the lowest life expectancy of 80 years compared to women other high-income countries. As of 2021, women in the U.S. had the highest rate of avoidable deaths.
  • Health Status: Women in the U.S. are among the highest rates of mental health needs, more than 50%. U.S. has the greatest proportion of women taking four or more prescriptions regularly and are most likely to dir from cardiovascular disease. (The American Journal of Managed Care, 2024)
So you may ask, how can “I prioritize women’s health?” – It’s not only by advocating for change and supporting each other, but focusing on YOU!

The Foundation for Women's Health

I believe taking a holistic view of your health and focusing on making small, positive lifestyle changes along with a science-backed framework can lead to a better foundation for overall health. Each women’s lifestyle and health is unique and should be treated as so. Eating well, moving daily, and prioritizing rest is an act of self-care and self-respect. Self-care isn’t selfish—it’s essential and needs to be recognized.

1. Own Your Self-Care: It’s not selfish—it’s necessary!

2. Set Boundaries: Protect your time, energy & mental health

3. Move Your Body: Strength training, walking & joyful movement keep us strong

4. Eat to Fuel, Not Just to Function: Whole, nourishing foods are an act of self-love

5. Get Enough Sleep: Rest is powerful, not a luxury

6. Find Community & Support: Strong relationships improve well-being

So what if, just for today, you:

💟 Set a boundary to protect your time? or
💟 Took a break without guilt? or
💟 Nourished your body with real, whole foods? or
💟 Moved in a way that makes you feel strong?

Because when you feel well, you thrive. And when women thrive, we change the world!
